Trouble is, OC - the most vocal homophobes are - or call themselves - Christian.
It gives them a moral high ground to spread the agent orange of their hate from.
And sadly, it's based on far less evidence in the Bible than many things which are disregarded by mainstream Christianity.
I honestly believe I can see all sides of it, in that I was brought up Catholic and genuinely believed in God, and that homosexuality was a sin, a symptom of degeneracy, a sickness that people needed to be cured from. My father, who I adore, who is the man that every man needs to measure up to in my lief, is homophobic. The closest male friend I had, admitted to knee-jerk homophobia. He was quintessetially liberal - his brother was gay and his best (male) friend was gay. He didn't hate gay men, but had an intrinsic revulsion for man-on-man action which he strove to overcome in order to be fair.
I don't judge people on anything other than their hate.
I have no religious belief at all now. It bothers me that Chritians and Muslims hold such sway in political opinion in this country. No offence intended but being a non-believer it pisses me off that I'm ruled by someone else's magic book. I know it's worse (by my reckoning) in America.
Onyx, I applaud your "judge not lest you be judged" attitude. I know the Cellar is no place to be spouting anti-gay rhetoric, but I am always relieved to meet Christ-emulating Christians. There are too many of the other sort out there imho. And without being a 'basher - I have met them. I just happen to live with two who aren't. Just wish I could get Dads to change his mind on teh ghey issue.
