I think that Fitzgerald's quote is a derivation of this one.

So I think Fitzgerald was referring to the ability to analyse two ideas at once without adopting either whereas your garden variety schizophrenic adopts
both.
But I could be wrong on both counts. Or I could be right
and wrong on both counts.
