I was having the same problem with my roommates computer a while ago. The problem is that at the time I was more concerned trying to get my Samba Shares working with his box and wasn't too concerned with our workgroup sharing. Somehow though I managed to make it work. The only thing I can think of that might be causing a problem is lack of Windows File and Print Sharing, but I'm assuming you're smarter than that and have it already installed.
