6PM EDT, September 15, 2003
By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Justin Consor
Astronaut Ed Lu snapped this photo of the eye of Hurricane Isabel from the International Space Station on September 13, 2003 at 7:18 AM EDT.
At the time, Isabel was located about 450 miles northeast of Puerto Rico and packed winds of 150 miles per hour with gusts up to 185 miles per hour.
The detail shows the structure of Isabel`s eyewall, where the strongest winds and rain bands are typically located. The image was taken with a digital camera that had an 180mm lens.
