It's not a paintbrush it's a pokey stick.
When you train with a Master, he has to have a way to poke you when you are getting things wrong.
But of course he can't sully his hands by touching you.
So he uses this stick.

I know.
Sometimes I think I still have bruises from the pokes I got when being trained in the most secret of arts.
