The calico kitty is in the "stray" section, meaning it just came in and hasn't been fully processed yet so they can't release it. That should just take a few days.

The black kitty is too young to be released and is in foster care for a few more weeks.

Rules, rules, rules...

They do have a "ready for immediate adoption" area, but unfortunately this is not a no-kill shelter (so much for Austin being so progressive, eh?) so the ones in the "stray" section only make it to adoption if there is space and they pass the health/temperament tests. "Stray" in the shelter's case means stray or owner surrendered. Our dog Molly was an owner surrender from this shelter.

There were great ones ready for adoption but we figured they were already safe so we looked for ones on the bubble.

We also noticed lots of Chihuahuas (Chee Hoo-Ah Hoo-Ahs to you Les Nessman fans) at the shelter, so I can only assume the fad of buying little dogs to carry in your purse like Paris Hilton is waning and now the dogs are being surrendered...
