Always go with ice. A bag of frozen peas or corn is the bomb if you don't have a formal ice bag. Just put the bag right on the affected knee with not more than a thin cloth to cover the skin. It is a bit hard and painful at first but gut through it till it starts to get numb and then you are there. It will help a lot. Oh, and keep it elevated while icing it.
