The key word of that statement was "need", if I understand you. But food in more than need. For humans it's about family, social interaction and separates us from the critters.
Look at the sales of cook books, kitchen gagets, spices and tablecloths to name a very few. Much of our lives revolve around food and the social interaction. Having the boss over for dinner or taking a client out to lunch and the whole family for holiday meals are important. Too important for leaves and poo.
