I say if someone is freaked out by your musical taste then you know they prefer pigeon-holing than real thinking. I'm not being holier-than-thou, I've been guilty myself. But I've been on the receiving end far more often.
Can't say I see the appeal in any metal, but good on you for going against sterotypes.
PS the closest I came was Lordi in the Eurovision Song Contest. North Europeans love them some metal. And even then it was only because they were like nothing else that year.
BTW this is the performance after they won. Hence the slightly incongruous Finnish top hat.
