Downer Alert -
Neil Young - Southern Man
In September 1988, my best friend and I took our girlfriends to a cabin his folks owned in upstate New York. The girls were taking a nap, and he and I were on the porch, watching the sunset, smoking a joint, and having a beer.
During this song, he turned to me and stated that he had leukemia.
I was dumbstruck.
He told me that he wouldn't make it to graduation.
We sat in silence for about an hour, just staring out over the lake.
Two months later, I was one of his pall-bearers.
