They got the same chance that Asians, Italians, Irish and many others have... some took it, some did not. Some became the top tier of society, per capita (Asians) by CHOICE alone DESPITE what they had to deal with socially and others DECIDED not to (many Irish and Scotts became hillbillies and other sects adopted similar fatalistic, separatist, tactics) intentionally.
EVERYONE has something they have to overcome in some way, NO ONE has the right to use it to state that it gives them the right not to do all they can to excel.
Everything one does as an individual is a choice.
