November 20, 2007: Leaning Church Breaks Pisa's Record

It's official! This church in Suurhusen, Germany has just been confirmed by the Guinness Book of World Records as being the world's most lopsided building, a record previously held by the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa.

The final tally was a whopping 5.19-degree angle, compared to Pisa's paltry 3.97 degrees.

It is interesting to note that the leaning section is actually newer than the rest of the church building. It was built in 1450, whereas the original structure was built sometime in the mid-1200s. Those 15th century corner-cutters put the tower addition on a wooden foundation. Obviously they didn't make 'em like they used to.

But it's not going to lean any further than it has: several attempts to stop the tower from leaning any further had been made since 1982, and it was finally stabilized in 1996. Which means it's really held this world record for over ten years now. What else aren't those Guinness people up-to-date on??
