A Marchioness is a high ranking noble - from memory it puts you above a Duke, and that's pretty good

The title can be held by a woman in her own right, or can mean the wife of a Marquess. We used to do Quiz Nights in a pub called the Marquess of Granby. Oh and the French equivalent to Marquess is a Marquis - as in the Marquis de Sade. Wich would make you his doormat wife Renée-Pélagie - anything you want to admit?
In modern Britain the first memory stirred by the mention of Marchioness would be of a Thames riverboat disaster. She sank while on a pleasure cruise, killing 30 of her young and beautiful partygoers.
