I order out alot using my credit card and the tip thing always works one of two ways:
1. When the guy comes to deliver the food he will give you the receipt, and just like at a restaurant you have to fill out the tip amount, and then fill in what the new total will be, including the tip. (Have a pen handy cause I swear to God they never have one)
2. The guy taking your order on the phone will just ask you how much tip you want to give.
Now just to clarify, there is a major problem with step 2 and an even bigger problem in your circumstance with the guy just assuming you want to give $3 dollars. It's equivalent to tipping your waiter/waitress before you eat.
