Ships are often named for earlier boats. It gives the sailors a connection with the past helping morale etc.. I had a history Prof in college who was in the Navy during WW2. He got an invite from some British sailors to see their ship. He made it as far as the gang blank where he stopped and and spit, refusing to go aboard. I think the boat was the HMS Jackal which was named for a ship involved in some notorious action against the US.
