The real reason is that they experience a huge buildup of power, due to their communities and Iraq, and there *needed* to be a candidate they could use it on. They smelled blood in the water in the Spring, enraged by current events, and could not resist trying to take someone down, even though it was the primaries and a huge, gigantic, massive strategic blunder.
