Michelle Wie To Participate in US Open Qualifier.
For those of you who do not know, Michelle Wie is a 16 year old golfer. And a pretty darn good one at that. She even has a 300 yard tee shot.
She won a local qualifier in Hawaii, and will now play at Canoe Brook on June 5th to try to qualify for the Open.
A Lot of the men are not happy about that, but it seems that mainly they dont want to deal with the amount of press that will be there at an event that usually has a very low draw. They seem to think that if she is good enough, then go for it, but they dont want to be the one partnered with her.
The reason I started this thread is this. A European tour member names Jean Van de Velde said : "I have no objection to Michelle Wie or any other women playing in our tournaments so long as we are allowed to play in theirs. And, yes, I'm ready to play in a skirt."
I want to know what you all think about this. In fact, Im not even all that sure what I think about it. Im very much into athletics. And I know that If I was really good at a sport, so good that I could consistantly smack down the women, I would want to have a shot at the men so I could improve myself and just see how I fare. Do people have a right to be upset that she is allowed to participate? Is it rediculous to argue that if women are allowed in PGA events that men should be allowed in LPGA events?
I guess we could say that the PGA has no rules against women, but the LPGA, even in name alone, declares it is for women only.
What do you all think?
