Sophia, a 21-year-old Bornean Orangutan, cradles her son Denda
as the infant makes his public debut Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002,
at Chicago's Brookfield Zoo.
The 4-pound male, whose name means 'fine' in Indonesian, was born
on August 23. The reddish-orange males can weigh up to 200 pounds
and are the largest animals to inhabit the rain-forest canopy.
