Good, strong, fresh coffee is hard to find when traveling the continental US. Most you find in the small-town midwest diners, restaurants, or cafes is so weak, and old, sitting on a burner for hours. Then there is the whole cream issue. Not powder, not vanilla-hazelnut-coffeemate, not non-dairy polymers, but real dairy can be scarce even in Wisconsin- I need me my 1/2 and 1/2.

Starbucks has risen because they have a good product. I regularly get my coffee on the inside, but when traveling, I will patronize Starbucks or any venue I know has a good dark roast at a reasonable price. I do, however, demand to refer to the cup sizes as small, medium, and large, fer godsakes.

I think the Starbucks juggernaut has actually kick-started the creation of more local coffee houses, drive -thru java huts, and cafes, each with more unique creative spins.
