Work Continues on Navy Ship Containing WTC Steel Despite Katrina
With a year to go before it even touches the water for the first time, the U.S. Navy's amphibious assault ship USS New York has already made history -- twice. Built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center, it weathered Hurricane Katrina, a more violent storm than it may ever encounter at sea

The USS New York is a USS San Antonio class (LPD-xx) assault ship. Unlike Amphibious Assault Ships USS Bataan and the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-xx; USS Wasp class) (that were finally in New Orleans five days after Katrina), the San Antonio class (LPD-xx) does not have the big flight deck.
