Drama

The woman and I are fortunate to live in an area where there is little crime...or anything else for that matter. Every now and then though, there is some little "snippet" of action that occurs, the most serious being a young girl that drowned in our complex's pool in June.

As I was sitting here checking out the Cellar tonight, I heard a screech and a loud crash just outside my living room window. I figured it was a car accident...it's happened before. I go out on the balcony to see what's going on, and I hear screaming. I can't see too well because the foliage of the tree obstructs our view of the street during this time of year. I go back in the apartment for a moment, throw some shoes on (as I plan to head downstairs to see what's up), then go back out on the balcony as I hear more screaming. I look down and see my first floor neighbor running towards the scene...at this point, I headed outside.

As I walk onto the street, I see that a Blazer has run into a smaller car along the north side of the street...it looked like the Blazer had crossed the yellow line and hit a parked car. About 30 or more people are gathered around the Blazer, trying to push it back. As I head over to help out, I hear the screams of a child...I see a 7 or 8 year old child pinned between the two vehicles. Everyone moves quickly to push the vehicle back...there's no more room around the Blazer, so I stand just behind the pushers, in case more help is needed. The police, fire trucks, and ambulance arrive quickly. The boy is in pain, but still conscious...fortunately for him, the closest hospital (Frankford-Torresdale) is right up the street.

Few seemed to know what exactly happened, and I didn't think it my business to be snooping too much. From the bits and pieces I gathered, and from what I could determine, another car got a flat tire, something happened with this car, causing the Blazer to swerve to the other side of the street, and a child happened to be standing in front of a parked car. The car with the flat tire apparently sped away, sparks trailing behind as they were driving on the rim at that point. Police are still on the scene, and a chopper is still flying around my complex as I type.

Hopefully that child will be fine, and if this car with the flat tire caused the accident, hopefully they'll catch him. You see this sort of thing on television...but to see it in front of you is another story. I'd like to think that having so many people around (there are about 500 apartments along my street) and the close proximity of the police and fire departments helped in this situation, and will hopefully result in a happy ending.
