And again we have a perfect example of why a national identity protection database is needed. One that accomplishes two necessary conditions:
1) you and only you can prove to others who you are and
2) you can confirm at any time that no one is using your identity.

Driver's licences were never created for such purpose AND are so easily counterfeited that even some 11 September attackers had fake NJ licences.

You are going to prove to someone you are who you claim by providing a social security number? Again, it was never created for that purpose AND that is only asking to have your identity stolen.

Show me anything existing that even partially achieves both point 1 and point 2. Identity theft exists and will get worse when the people don't demand existing technology be made available. To corporations, identity theft is an acceptable risk of doing business - an acceptable cost. Therefore same must apply to you. Clearly no one is complaining. So identity theft is not a problem.
