 I apologize for the further digression, but I get stuck obsessing on things like this until I have an answer... So does the "removed" go in both directions chronologically? That is to say, my cousin's 6-year-old kid is my "first cousin once removed," but what am I to him? If I am also a "cousin once removed" to the kid, then isn't my mother's 55-year-old cousin 
also my "cousin once removed?" It seems odd to have different generations be designated the same thing.
