Girl Dies After Sea Rescue from Mud Flats
Somerset, U.K. Sunday June 23, 2002
A five-year-old girl has died from hypothermia after being rescued from mud flats.
The girl and her father, from Worcestershire, became trapped while walking at Burnham-on-sea in Somerset.
Coastguards at Swansea were alerted by the Burnham-on-Sea beach warden who raised the alarm when he saw them more than a mile from the shore.
An RAF helicopter rescue team winched the man to safety but the girl was missing for some time before she was spotted.
The pair were airlifted to Weston General Hospital in Weston-super-Mare. But the girl later died hours later in the hospital's intensive care unit. The father is not seriously injured.
The pair got into difficulties during low water as the mud acted like quick sand.
