A trail now extends south of the Art Museum on the east side at least as far as Walnut Street. Best free place to park for that trail or the river drive trails is Pennsylvania Avenue, if you can find a spot.
If you're taking kids on the Schuylkill River trail, the best place is right around the Betzwood trailhead or east from the Conshohocken rail station. Or in Perkiomen Valley Park on the adjoining Perkiomen Valley trail. Near Norristown on the trail, there's often people hanging out who may or may not be up to no good, and the trail is in somewhat poor condition there anyway.
