Tonight, when I got out of my car at home, a doe came walking across the parking lot. She passed within about 6 feet of where I was standing. You know, in a kind of "I know you don't have a rifle and a doe tag" kind of way?
But she wasn't alone.
She had a fawn with her, that was so tiny, it had to have been born some time today.
Both of them walked to about 10 feet past me, and stood on the lawn, in the very clear light from the security lights along that edge of the parking lot.
We stood staring at each other for about two or three minutes before the doe realized that she must have left the burner on the stove and took off with the tiny fawn following behind her.
The fawn just about came up to the does knees, if that.
