But seriously, those three things are the most important part.
1) They have to
know that they will be punished,
2) They have to
know that the punishment will be delivered quickly,
3) They have to
know that the punishment will be severe enough to make the experience one they don't want to repeat.
The rest of it is making the punishment fit the offense.
