Well, knowing the creator of this site, it's more likely a literature reference. But I wouldn't discount movies either, anything at all helps at this point. The only things with salesmen I can think of are:
"Death Of A Salesman" by Arthur Miller. Synopsis: Willy Loman is a travelling salesman, the book never tells what he's selling. He can no longer sell anything, and is no longer popular He is ridden by flashbacks of "Uncle Ben", who struck it rich and is tempting him in cryptic hints to kill himself. His family notices he is trying to kill himself by inhaling gas from the water heater(?). He eventually kills himself by means of car.
"The Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka. Gregor Samsa, another salesman, wakes up one morning to find he has been turned into a cockroach, bedbug, some sort of bug like that. His literal death is when an apple rots on his carapace and kills him. His figurative death is as soon as his family stops loving him when they see his new appearance. One of the pages on TINP references the opening of this book. this is the ../carpace.htm page.
"Death Of A Travelling Salesman" by Eudora Welty. This book is about RJ..someone (sorry, cannot remember whom), who eventually 'dies of a broken heart/loneliness.'
For audition i can think only of Kiki's audition, which she cannot attend for obvious reasons.
Maybe the link betweeen the two is how each died? TINP gave a clue on the official forums to 'be literal.' Someone else who got in said it's something "subtle and subliminal." I know separate theories and synopses have been posted here before, but maybe seeing them all together or in different words will help someone. I hope so!
