Well, they didn't know radiation back then. It was stilla relatively brand-new concept to them, as were it's abilities and effects.

For example, when they did the post-WW2 bomb tests in the Pacific at Bikini Atoll. They dropped a bomb on a bunch of semi-mothballed battleships and submarines of various manufacture. When it was all said and done, there were ships that were burnt but still intact. Naturally, the sailors were sent back on it, ran a hose over the hull to cool it off, then sailed it back home. This was less than 24 hours after the blast.

They just didn't know.
