The Golden Venture was a cargo ship that ran aground near New York City in 1993. The "cargo" in this case were Chinese people attempting to enter the United States illegally, who had paid snake heads approximately $35,000 to get to the US, and would have most likely been forced to work off their debt to the snake heads by participating in the drug trade, prostitution, or other illegal activities.
One of my friends represented many of these people in their cases with the US Department of Immigration and Naturalization Services in their fight to remain in this country.
