I had a coworker who was a pilot. I remember that the biggest expense for airplanes, other than the cost due to manufacturers exposure to lawsuits, was maintenance. Airplanes, even private ones, have some of the most stringent inspection and maintenance requirements I have ever heard of. This makes sense when you consider how much damage a faulty airplane can do versus a car. Even if you could buy a flying car, the cost to satisfy FAA regulations each year would be terrible.
