Jag, I hear what you're saying, I really do, but that's a pretty misguided attitude.
I was raised to hunt and kill bear, bobcat, deer, racoon, squirrels, birds, etc, etc.
Now, I personally can't do that anymore, I'd rather use a camera, but back hunters rights 100%. Lets just talk about the deer herd for example.
Stop the deer hunt for one year, no more killing harmless animals right? Those 100,000 deer you just saved (I have no idea the stats, think it's close tho) run into cars and die, get diseased and die, starve to death in the winter due to unusually high herd numbers. This state cannot support such a high deer population. In fact the cars & disease do go up, but most simply starve to death.
Now about 99% of hunters I know, get there deer, process it, and eat it. They probably break even on it, after guns, ammo, gas, time off work, etc. But it is a sport, these people think about deer hunting all year long, it is their football season if you will.
You and I may not like it but it is far more humane than doing nothing. And a pretty big percentage of hunters here donate the venison to food pantries. Beats the hell out of rotting carcases on the road or in the fields IMHO,
