I think it comes from a TV Western and was uttered by a cavalry sergeant to his officer just before a couple of hundred very warlike indians appeared on the skyline.
I'm sure it was also said by Sergeant Wilson, a man who always gave the impression he'd rather be somewhere else, in Dad's Army.
