I have a friend here in the DC area who was approached by one of these companies because they wanted to film in his house. He was a 20-something shlub at the time, and so he and his roommates agreed to it. They got paid decent money, put up in a hotel for a few weeks, and later got to see the movie and Holly Hunter hanging out in their crib in Broadcast News. My friend had a cast iron bed at the time, and while the filming company temporarily replaced most of the furniture in the house, they wanted to use his bed, but asked if they could paint it. He agreed because they threw something like $100 bucks at him. So they painted it a different color. He foolishly asked them to repaint it the original color when they were done, and they did a shitty job of it, and then his bed didn't even look like the bed Holly Hunter was in on the big screen. He felt like he lost some bragging rights that Holly Hunter was in his bed because it was a different color.

All in all, he said he would do it again just for the novelty of it. And a story to tell.
