There's a great scene in
Hell On Wheels, where Cullen and Elam have gone to NYC for some reason, and get new tailor-made suits. The tailor asks Elam (a black former slave) "Do you dress to the left or the right, sir?" Elam looks to Cullen who makes a discrete gesture by holding his fist down at his side with the index finger extended and makes a single wag left to right with the finger. Suddenly, a light goes on in Elam's eyes, and he says "Oh! Well, I guess, to da lef'."
