1/16/2006: Homemade submarine

http://cellar.org/2006/homemadesub.jpg

His name is Reinhard Kuester, and he's smiling from within his very own homemade sub. It's named "Nemo", and it can dive to 98 feet. It's seen here making its maiden voyage in the Helene-See lake near Frankfurt, Germany.

People make their own planes, I know, and cars and houses. Any of those seem lke a better choice. I'm not sure why you'd make your own sub. You don't need to defend your shores, you don't need to deploy nuclear weapons. You can't really go all that fast. All you can do is go down and look at things - unless you spend a lot more time and build some sort of mechanical arm.

You could die. You'll probably get cold and wet! And if the guy in front farts, forget about it! (Surface! Surface!!)

Look at that smile though! Maybe he's been looking at the surface of that lake his whole life?

Right on! As a diver, I would love to have something like that so my non-diving friends & family could come along.

I better not show that to my dad or my husband - they would try to build one, and I'm sure it wouldn't be cheap.

Someday, I want to have that smile on my face. It's the smile of a person who's acheived a life-long ambition.

First, though, I need to find out what my life-long ambition is...

Maybe he's the one who farted... :bogroll:

Same reason any other product of passion is created. "Because (it's fun|I can)"

Are you sure? I think we now know what he's up to. ;-)

"We all fart in a homemade submarine,
Homemade submarine,
Homemade submarine."

Looks like a lot of fun to me. :D

This guy has a lot of brains and balls. But I bet he doesn't have claustrophobia. This is cool. I'd like to try it as long as someone else tries it hundreds of times first.

It's a two man milk churn :D

Uh....question........how does he know it will only go to 98' and not 100'.
Guess that's something you only find out once. :mg:

It was probably stated originally as 30 m, which is 98' when the "extact" conversion is rounded off to the nearest foot. Considering the relative precision of the initial figure, likely a simple multiple of 5 or 10, it should have been rounded to 100' instead.

I'm reminded of this show.

The hatches on the top remind me of old milk cans from a dairy farm.
