Still Feisty After 35 Years
It was a memorable episode. B.D. was sent to Iraq where he lost his leg. He calls his wife, as I remember it, "Well I have some good news and bad news. The good news is that I am now down to my ideal weight."
The Iraq war death rate has been substantially less because of medical response. But the number of victims missing limbs is significantly higher. Something like one amputee for every eight deaths. My friend's husband is leaving for Iraq in just a couple of weeks. He's had a mild heart attack already and also has a sleep disorder.
If there is an increase in serious wounds among our troops, it may be that less fit individuals are being sent to combat areas because the Army is short on man power and long on troop commitments. |
