Under-reported story: OU bomber last week was probably radical Islamist

I had heard this story, "Blast rattles Oklahoma game" over the weekend, but haven't heard anything since.

Instapundit linked to this picture of it all. It turns out:

- he blew up 100 yards from 84,000 football fans attending the OU-Kansas game

- he tried to buy ammonium nitrate last week, which is the same substance used in the old OK City bombing.

- he had a huge cache of weapons in his apartment.

- it looks like he used TATP to blow himself up, a favored explosive of radical Islamists such as Richard Reid.

- He may have attended the same mosque as Zacarias Moussaoui.

Reports I have seen of that story very much downplayed any islamic connection, but made certain to mention "depressed young college student."

Interesting.

Happy Ramadan, by the way.

Well. UT, if I can think Jr. is a psychopath, I guess you can think this kid was part of some Jihad. He grew up in Colorado Springs and was a honors graduate of one of the high schools here. Apparently he was a lonely, emotionally troubled, young man who had a fascination with explosive devices. His major was mechanical engineering, but he couldn't handle the mathematics classes required for an engineering major. He had joined the Triangle Fraternity at OU. This fraternity had been specifically requested to give places to Pakistani students who were subjected to various threats in the wake of 9/11. The kid's roommate was Pakistani, but he, himself, did not attend services at a Mosque. He may have gone there to pick up the roommate and give him rides back to their apartment, but that's about it. The suicide or Jihad attempt took place as the kid sat on a bench outside a science classroom building on the OU campus. Authorities continue to treat it as a case of suicide, as of today.

More about the young man who killed himself can be found in the University's student newspaper

Another case of a bright young man that could have done well...but he blew it.
