9/29/2005: Beard and mustache championships

http://cellar.org/2005/beardcontest.jpg

Axlrosen suggests some images from the world Beard and Mustache Championships gallery and from a past BBC gallery of the 2003 event. The world championship is on Saturday and we will see if anyone can best the 03 champ shown above. And below.

They do have different categories. Above is the "freestyle" winner of 03.

I have facial hair but it is sparse... nothing like this. Did you know there are 17 recognized styles? I did not. Apparently the Germans usually win. The US team has a blog.

Is that richlevy up there? :)

I'm damn near clean-shaven by comparison.

I'd love to grow a beard like the last guy and I've got the genes to do it. However I can't get past the scrathcy/itchy phase at about 3-4 weeks despite several gung-ho attempts during college.

Slang came really close to that once ...

One of my high school teachers had a beard that was just a tad (probably several tads) shorter than that one.

Um... anyone else have an issue with the following statement from the USA Blog?

"Germany, which will be fielding at least 85 contestants, is the dominant world power in this sport."

Not only that, there are dozens of beard clubs throughout the world - espeically in Germany. e.g. http://www.handlebarclub.org.uk/linksc.htm (I also like their FAQ..)

Seems like it would be hard to do everyday things with this much facial hair. It would damn near have to be an obsession. Unless you sent hygiene to hell in a handbasket. Differn't strokes.... I'll keep shaving 1-2 times daily so I can live with myself.

Damn hippies. ;)

Freshman year I stopped shaving, and grew a full beard. Even after the itchy phase, it was a huge annoyance, with tangles, scratchiness, hairs everywhere, etc. I shaved it off after I had used it to freak out my family during the holidays.

I'm down to the thinnest sole patch now. I couldn't bear the thought of being clean shaven. BTW the dude in the top photo with the silver gray jacket is my pop-in-laws twin. Maybe he'll defend Americas honor next year.
