Here's the deal.....

If your system is new enough, and I mean new within the last 5-8 years, you can boot to your CD-Rom. You might have to go into your bios to set this up.

Enter the Bios: Turn you machine on and just keep hitting either the Delete key or the F2 key (depends on your system - Dells like F2 while other systems stick to the delete key) until you go into the bios page. Carefully poke around until you find something that addresses Boot Sequence and you can change the sequence of your boot devices (floppy, CD-rom, HD, ETC.).

*** Warning ***
Do not muck about in the BIOS screens and change things you don't understand. You could seriously f*** up you machine if you don't know what you are doing.

Boot to CD-ROM: Stick your brand new Windows XP Home Edition CD-Rom disk in the CD-rom Drive and reboot the system. If you system is set up correctly, you will boot into the setup routine of Windows XP.

"Blanking" you HD: Provided you backed everything up on you HD you can confidently erase your HD. During the setup sequence of windows, it will detect your existing OS partition (whether that is Win98, WinNT). It will ask if you want to delete that partion. If you answer "yes," it will erase your hard drive and perform a "clean" install.

System disk: Since you can boot directly to your Windows XP install disk, you don't need a system boot floppys. In fact, they don't even ship the boot system disks anymore. If you machine can't boot to a CD-ROM, you can make boot disks (either through the setup disk or you can download a bunch of files on Microslug's website), but in my experience, after you create the six of so disks, they never work. It never gets past disk 4 or five before failing.

Anything that I didn't explain clearly, just post up any questions.

Hope this helps.

Windows XP or Windows XP Upgrade? Why after doing the upgrade would you now want to blank (erase?) the hard drive? Furthermore, why would you want to format a perfectly good hard drive? What OS are you upgrading from?

Unlike DOS, one cannot fully load an XP (NT based) system from a diskette. The diskette (actually multiple diskettes) can start the NT loading. But essential files to finish an NT based boot (even into text mode) must exist on larger storage media such as hard drive or CD-Rom.

Thanks Hobbs , that explains LOTS!!!!!!!

TW , I was running ME , it doesn't support USB prorts verry well ( for Jump drives , photo flash card readers , steering wheel , etc,,,)

I am a command line comando from why back , my first pc was a 386 16mhz with 8 meg of ram and a 40 meg HD , this puter has gotten SOOOOO clogged up with half loaded and fully loaded Shit , spy wear , and i cought 3 different virousis trying to have their way with the HD recently . I have cleaned up what I could find , but it is time to blank the puppy and start from scratch .

Starting with a blank slate is always a good idea.

Congrats! It's as easy as that. You will thank yourself for reformatting and installing a fresh copy. It guarantees you'll get rid of all those buggers that will mess you life up somewhere down the road.

My inner grammar nazi is having fits.
  • Punctuation is never preceded by a space. Instead of "back , my first", write "back, my first". Instead of "( home )" write "(home)".
  • Multiple commas have no meaning. Instead of "etc,,,," write "etc."
  • prorts -> ports
  • comando -> commando
  • puter -> I'll forgive that
  • Shit -> shit
  • spy wear -> spyware
  • virousis -> viruses

The reasons for increased speed is because Windows NT based OSes were (according to Microsoft) 20% faster compared with Windows 95 based OSes. Windows ME is simply the latest and last upgrade of Windows 95.

Be certain up front (and before you reload everything) that your HD is using the NTFS filesystem. If it is still FAT, get it converted before you reload the drive with application software and data.

Speaking of fast, has anyone seen the OS X that was ported to x86 yet?

You'll also notice that the boot up is screamingly faster than WinNt, 98, ME. Very stable. Friendly. Easy to feed, and won't stain your carpets.
