Drunken Dragon Party Hot Dogs

Once I overcome my inertia (probably soon, nobody has posted anything in a while), I'm going to head downstairs and start working on my culinary masterpiece.

Masterpiece in the sense that Velvet Elvises are masterpieces.

See, the daughter of my friend is having a Christening for her new daughter tomorrow, with party to follow.

You basically can't refuse the new mom anything that she wants, right? Well, last week, as I'm RSVPing the invite, she says to me "Wolf, you're going to make your hot dogs, aren't you? I really, really like them!"

So I'm stuck. I can't just take my chip 'n dip tray, a large container of hummus, and a couple bags of pita breads, which is how I usually get out of having to cook party food.

What are Drunken Dragon Party Hot Dogs?

3 pound box of hot dogs (you can do this with the little wieners, but they are more expensive than a 3 pound box of dogs)
1 big bottle of Heinz ketchup
Hot Sauce (the first batch used something called "Dragon's Breath" or "Thai Dragon Hot Sauce" or something similar. The bottle is long gone and I've never seen it in the market again). Today's batch will contain "Spontaneous Combustion"
Jack Daniels (for both the recipe and the chef)

You cut the dogs into bite sized chunks. You can do this while they are still in the box. Dump the box of cut dogs into a large enough pot to hold them. Start browning them.

When you get to the point where you were inatentive for a moment and the hot dogs are starting to get more blackish than brownish, reduce the heat and dump the bottle of ketchup on them.

Stir them around some. Add the hot sauce to the expected taste of your guests.

Throw the Jack Daniels in the mix. (usually between 1/4 and 1/2 cup)

Let it simmer a bit more and serve, or place in container for later rewarming.

Put a pile of toothpicks (preferably the ones shaped like swords or the ones with the little cellophane frillies on the ends) next to a big heaping bowlful of the dogs.

It's not a big deal to make really, but they are pretty popular. I have had to send folks to the store for ingredients for another batch.

Minor technique refinement to the recipe ...

To add the Jack Daniels, pour into the ketchup bottle, because there is always a ton of ketchup stuck to the inside that just won't come out. Add the hot sauce (this makes certain you get even hot sauce distribution, rather than one exceptionally hot hot dog). Shake the bottle and pour into the pot.

Brilliant! I love it!! Party food is best, no?

I shall try.

PS--can you be a tiny bit more specific than 'big bottle of ketchup'-? Like, how big? There's a ton of different "big" out there.

Add enough ketchup to provide desired slop.

Not huge, just big.

I think it was the 24 ounce size. Of course, if you're making less than a party (3 pound) batch, you need less ketchup.

You need enough to get all the hot dogs ketchuped, plus a little extra so there's some saucy goodness in the pan. The Jack Daniels does expand the liquid a touch, so make your judgment after that's added.

i think i'd rather bob for turds in a bucket of urine.

what the hell is wrong with you people?

You've never had them, although I don't doubt that at some point in your life you have bobbed for turds in a bucket of urine.

They were very well received by the party guests.
