(I only had my 0.3 megapixel phone camera with me)

Identical shelf-end displays with your basic "back to school" theme have some items for sale appropriate for elementary school kids (cute pens, notebooks) and others aimed more at the college crowd (shower caddies, and... the above).

I don't really give a crap, but it's surprising to see a company this size, that's supposed to have it all together, that wants to censor the music and movies that it sells,... make a PR mistake like this. It's funny.

I agree. The irony is amusing. Question: What is the scale here? Are these "shot glasses" the size of a highball tumbler? I'm imagining they're about 10-12 oz based on my eyeball comparison to the "sweater shaver" in the upper right corner of the top picture. **OBVIOUSLY** no one could "shoot" that much liquor, so the complaint is that they're being advertised as shot glasses. How dumb.

Well, maybe not dumb. The eldest SonofV awoke this morning for the first time in his dorm room. I consistently miss the mark on how together kids that age can be. For the record, I miss both high and low. I watched the CNN Money hour yesterday and one of the segments talked about marketing credit cards to college students. The point was that the trend in the industry is away from making money by offering credit to those who can easily pay (business people, back in the day) and toward those who cannot pay as easily, like college kids. No jobs, strong desire to spend beyond their means, inexperience with credit, money, budgeting, etc. I recognize the sad fact that I am a graybearded, dust-farting senile old fossil whose own college experience has no bearing on the modern era whatsoever, but, seriously. Kids, wait, young adults of legal drinking age are pouring shots in vessels like this? And W*lm*rt is hawking them as school supplies. Hawhawhaw.

You're not the only person to take issue with W*lm*rt and schools. Here's a story about the local teacher's union's complaint of the company's "anti-education policies", and a call to action.

It appears that the translation from Chinese to engrish has missed the mark :D

One might also expect those "shot glasses" to be in several other departments with packaging ranging from "new and cool fishbowls" to automotive drain pans of some type to....who knows.

And another thing now that I think about it.

It's nice to see someone taking photos of things inside a store while the store's security is taking photos of every_single_person in that store, shoplifter or not.

The only thing Walmart has together is billions of American dollars they're sending to China so the Chinese can outbid us for oil.
You saved $3 at Walmart and paid an extra $10 at the pump. You're so clever. :headshake

Are those glasses perhaps intended for shooting? As targets, I mean. They are pretty brightly colored ...

My college experiences do seem to indicate that a 10-12 oz glass is just about the right size for doing shots.

But I did go to West Chester State College. YMMV.

Wally World can be a bit inconsistent in its messages ...

April and I were at Target last week, and in the Back to School section, they had these ridiculously huge and ridiculously small Scotch tape dispensers (with huge and little tape rolls to boot). I bought one of the big ones for her sister (who's a junior in HS), but is there a real purpose for such a thing?

Happy Monkey 08-23-2005 02:17 PM

Absolutely!

There are 24 packs of beer located in the school supply section at the Wal-Mart SuperCenter in Champaign. No joke. I was shocked. Guess it's essential here for the learning curve.

HM, that is beautiful and i appreciate the hard work that goes into making those, but i still don't get it.

Happy Monkey 08-23-2005 05:50 PM

There's nothing to get. That's why it's a craft and not an art. Though, if it were an art, I probably would leave it up to the viewer to bring their own meaning to it. I'm lazy that way.

Every once in a while, I'll have an idea and it will nag me until I actually do it. Maybe it's some sort of compulsive thing, or maybe not.

Plus, I've got seasons of TV shows on DVD to watch and nothing else to do with my hands.

You're watching the wrong shows. ;)

Happy Monkey 08-24-2005 04:27 PM

Those shows don't have seasons.
