The Curse of Pooh
 

A couple of days ago we lost Tigger (Paul Mitchell). Now it is Piglet.

John Fiedler was one of my all time favorite character actors, playing such parts as the infamous Rejack on the original Star Trek, Mr. Peterson on the original Bob Newhart show (still one of the funniest shows ever), one of Oscar and Felix' card playing cronies in the film The Odd Couple, and countless other memorable parts.

People like Mitchell and Fiedler are irreplaceable parts of our popular culture. I miss them all when they pass.

I'm with ya brotha! It makes me sad to see such talented voice actors passing away because they can never be replaced. Oh....they try, but it is never the same. The voice is always off, the inflictions, the delivery... Just ask Kermit the Frog and bugs bunny. There was a time after Walt Disney's passing were Mickey Mouse just sounded horrible. When Mel Blanc died, it was a passing of an era for me. That was my big loss.

I was poking around the IDMB website and was very surprised to see the huge carreer John had outside the Winnie the Pooh projects. We tend to forget that these people are every much accomplished actors and not just cute voices behinde animated characters.

BTW, I hadn't heard Paul Winchell died. Usually I hear about these things. Guess it didn't get a lot of press. I did find out that Paul's claim to fame was that he was a very talented ventriloquist early in his career.

That makes me wonder... if someone 50-60 years from now is going to say the same sort of thing about Mike Myers.

But when can we say goodbye to Eyore? My God! What a pathetic sad sack. Not the voice artist, certainly. He's amazing. But that little donkey needs to have his meds checked. Puh-lease.

I'm old enough to remember Paul Winchell's act. I even read his book on how to do ventriloquism. Though I never got any good at it.

On Eeyore. You have to read the books for Eeyore to make much of an impression. Kids books are so excruciatingly happy, as a rule, that the occaisional appearance of Eeyore was a relief.

According to the TAO OF POOH (Benjamin Hoff) Eeyore is Knowledge for the Sake of Complaining About Something.

Since when did complaining require knowledge?! I mean, look around you. Has that stopped or slowed anyone in the cellar? I think not.

Hey, I'm just saying what Eeyore stands for in the Tao tradition. Pooh is the Uncarved Block of Wood. Rabbit is Knowledge for Knowledges' Sake and Owl is...I forget. He's something. It's all there. Look it up!

Yeah. I wouldn't even introduce to a two year old the concept that Piglett or Tigger is dead. But maybe (probably) I misread your intentions.

It won't be too much until you have a stuffed Tigger and stuff Piglett in two shoe boxes sitting in wake. Yikes! Now thats creepy.

Perhaps if done subtly and for your own grief processing, then the child wouldn't become aware of your silent tribute at all?

Nah, it's never to early to learn the harsh reality of death. Wait for the party, announce that Tigger and Piglet have died, then have a funeral in the backyard and bury the stuffed animals. Bonus points if any of the other kids' parents actually sue you.
