10/28/2004: Elephant sculpture
http://cellar.org/2004/elephantmedia.jpg
English artist Anthony Heywood was inspired to create this for Australia's Bondi Beach "Sculptures by the Sea"... after watching TV footage of elephants being killed. We've had a few elephant killings on IotD, here and here. (Mr. Heywood is unwrapping the work, the wrap is not a part of it.) |

I had two thoughts. The first one ocurred to me before I clicked on the link, and that thought was "How in the world do elephants hold the hammer and chisel?!", but then I reasoned that they could be working in some other medium, perhaps clay or bronze.
The second thought was after I looked at the picture, and that thought was "Wow...that's pretty damn cool." |
Yep- I wouln't have wanted the job of removing all the bugs post transit. The plastic wrap was the most brilliant idea of the whole sculpture, in my opinion.
Maybe I should try to purchase this work to place in my foyer. I wonder what they will do with it after the exibit? I think it would make a very nice artificial reef. |
I'd like to see the rest of the "Sculptures by the Sea". Leah is going Sunday, maybe she'll take some pictures for us. :)

I LOVE IT, I LOVE IT :D I'm going to see this exhibition at Bondi Beach on Sunday. The exhibition only opened yesterday. Can't wait. No sleep in for me on Sunday, my boyfriend and I will be there early for a spot of breakfast. I'll even get a photo of the elephant sculpture so watch out Bruce :). No where near as good as the real things, but fun nonetheless.

Bruce, you just beat me by the hair of my chin.
|
By the way, I think that's my old dish rack from 1995.
|
There’s something about a “spot of breakfast” that stirs my imagination.
Hmmm....so does the hair on your chin. Have fun...take lots of pictures......send them. |
Do the TV's work? He should loop the footage that inspired the work.
|
That would be treading into Nam June Paik's territory.
