Patrick Deuel, 42, of Valentine, weighed 1,072 pounds when he was admitted to Avera McKennan Hospital eight weeks ago. Deuel, who is just under 6 feet tall, is on a 1,200 calorie-a-day diet.

He wants to lose at least another 450 pounds or more in the next year and a half to two years. He is being supervised by a team of eight doctors.

"If we hadn't gotten him here, he'd be dead now," said Fred Harris, Deuel's lead doctor.

good for him. but i wonder - did he just wake up one day and realize he was fat? the previous 20 years he felt just fine but he realized one fine morning that he could stand to lose a few lbs?

Why 1200 calories a day I wonder? I mean, doesn't that seem excessive?

maybe with that amount of mass, he needs that amount to keep him functional without going into shock or something?

You can't just starve the guy. His body will rebel and he won't lose any weight. A nutritionalist gave me the whole story on how this works, and it's complicated (or, was for me :) but no matter how fat you are you need to eat a little something to keep your electrolytes balanced (sodium, potassium, etc.)

Even his eyes are fat.

Yeah. The human body has what is essentially a "famine mode". If you have a sudden, drastic decrease in caloric intake, your body will respond by slowing the metabolism and converting as much as possible to fat (long term calorie and water storage). That's why sudden-starvation diets cause your weight to yo-yo or increase, and rarely cause weight loss. It is best to decrease your calories over a week or two. Then, your metabolism doesn't slow down and you don't create fat reserves.

"Bite" may be an understatement. I think this dude gnaws and eats his nails. Looks like he ate most of his left ear also. [ Is that possible?] That could account for 1/8-1/4 oz. of weight loss right there. He could remove the warts from under his left eye and maybe grab another gram or two. I really like the push-up bra. My feelings about marriage have changed. If this guy can be married, why the hell....... oh well. My humble advice : gain another 326 lbs. Win the world record. Take the fame & fortune and consider major lyposuction. Observation: I bet she (his wife) likes it on top. Please forgive me. You gotta love this guy............................................................
