9/2/2004: Massive sinkhole in Richmond VA
http://cellar.org/2004/sinkhole.jpg
Not all flood damage is from rising water. Some of it is from water saturating the ground where it normally doesn't, and weakening the ground itself by washing out the limestone or whatever other soft rock lies underneath. This hole is pretty unusual since it took out an entire intersection. Can you imagine living in that house right now? Elsewhere in Richmond, a 2' by 4' sinkhole ended the home season of the local minor-league ball team as their field is figured to be unplayable. |
Anybody know if most homeowner insurance covers sinkholes? If the house isn't actually damaged, but is declared unlivable by the city, can the owners make a claim? It would really really suck to own that house.

an inground swimming hole doesn't add much value to an appraisal. but one that big? think of all the fun you and your friends can have.
|
Suck to own that house? Aw come'on, it cuts back on traffic noise.
|
it would suck to own those 2 cars!

|
Holy crap! And that almost took out the house.
|
If they removed all those barriers the hole would fill up in no time. ;)

Especially if you post some signs and arrows saying: New Wal-Mart, *Grand Opening!* :D |
I live in Richmond!!
Yeah the damage was incredible. There's one part of town that's inbetween two hills, called Shockoe Bottom, and the flooding was massive there. 5 people drowned. Cars and trucks and tractor trailors floating down the street, etc. After the storm there was a huge mudpile filling up a parking lot and burying cars. go to www.timesdispatch.com and watch the slideshow on there. Some of the pictures of washedout roads are incredible. |
Whew...that doesn't look like my parent's neighborhood or my old neighborhood. That really has to suck though, look and how nice that lot's yard is. I wonder how many people might have to apply for LOMAs after this.
