Food.. and NO food.
maybe this isn't the right place to post this but meh, here it is.
My Step-Sister has been suffering for a while with Anorexia Nervosa, and my family is trying very hard to cope with how to handle her. It has been going on for a few years now (she has been hospitalized twice)and she has just moved back into home and stopped working all together (she is 22 yrs old). She doesnt do anything during the day (except exercise, although she is too 'weak' to work) the family is paying for all her expenses (car, loans, allowance) which i disagree with. she is causing great division and fights between our family because everyone wants to deal with it differently. we have tried interventions with her shrink, tried princess treatment, tried being harsh. I was looking up on the net some sites that might help me understand a bit more and found this ... http://www.network54.com/Forum/141929 Which is just... crazy! I was just posting this to ask if anyone else has had any experience with the disease before and how to handle a stubborn patient. |
A good start might be to stop categorising her as "stubborn". It must be extraordinarily difficult to have such a fraught relationship with food.

No, No.. I'm not categorising her as stubborn.. she IS stubborn. a typical capricorn who is not only stubborn in relation to her eating disorder, but also in most other aspects of her life.
I understand it must be difficult ect, but sometimes its like its all just a big game to her. for example when I ask how her day was, sometimes she'll tell me she got some new tricks for hiding this, or found something to drink to make her throw up quicker, or any other equally revolting comment. Dont really need someone to tell me I'm wrong for calling her stubborn, when she clearly is, It's awful to have to watch her do this to herself, all we want to do is get her better. |

Now, what she has is a behavioral disorder, and until she is convinced that AN is not in her best interest she will continue on this path. Karen Carpenter anyone? |
