Funny thing about that: my driver's license says they're blue. It also says I'm two inches shorter than I really am.

This is because my father went with me to get my very first license (law requires his signature somewhere, I forget why...) I was filling out the form, and he kept making me change it.

"Don't be silly, your eyes aren't green, they're blue."

"Um... I really think they're green. Besides the fact that I see them in the mirror everyday, everyone else has always said they're green too."

"That form isn't talking about your kind of green, they're talking about people with those really vibrant green eyes. Your eyes are blue." (I know better than to argue with him at this point, he's a very stubborn man and the world IS the way he sees it.)

"...Fine..."

"Now wait a second, what are you putting there? You're not 5'9"! You're 5'7" at the most."

"I'm not! In fact I just had a doctor's appointment and they weighed and measured me. And you can't tell me it's a subjective thing like eye color, it's a measurement!"

"Oh baloney. Look. I'm six feet. You stand next to me. That's at least a 5 inch difference between us, so you can't be taller than 5'7". I know all women want to be tall, and don't worry, 5'7" is plenty tall. You're 5'7", stop arguing about it."


To this day, I've never been able to get it corrected. Every time I renew my license, I go in person, tell them to look at my freaking eyes, measure me, and I take the vision test because I had LASIK surgery years ago. And every time they say "Yes, we'll fix all that." Then my new license comes, with all the old information still on it, and still with Restriction A for corrective lenses.

Wait: your own father was debating about your eye color? The color that he helped to create? :confused:

My father will argue about ANYTHING. It's still a very proud moment for me when I change his mind on anything.

Hmmm....ever since UT posted that picture of himself, the Cellar has been attracting some rather handsome women.;)

just curious.....how's your vision now? 20/20 or better? i had LASIK too but i still have to wear glasses to fly/drive. last test i think i was about 20/45 (still not bad compared to the 20/400 that i was before). my left eye though was originally done by means of PRK, a far more painful experience than LASIK and not as effective. i did a follow up with LASIK on it but i still have my astigmatism.

20/20 in the left eye, 20/40 in the right. (20/40 in both eyes is the limit for driving without lenses in Texas.)

There's always the chance I could regress later on, of course. Eyes are stretchy things. But I started out so bad, I don't care... I was legally blind before (my prescription was around -9.5, I don't even know what kind of 20/X number that translates into) so wearing some thin, lightweight little -1 or -2 prescription glasses wouldn't bother me a bit. And of course there are always contacts, although the doctor mentioned that my eyes might be more easily irritated by them now.

Technically, if my vision did start to go bad again, the "warranty" on my eyes covers any additional surgeries to re-zap them, but because I started off at such an extreme, it meant they had to take off a lot of cornea to fix it. I'm now at damn near the minimum thickness of cornea one is allowed to safely have.

I do get the "starbursts" around lights at night that some LASIK patients complain about, but usually only when my eyes are tired, and even then if I concentrate for a second I can make them go away. I don't even know what I'm actually doing to get rid of them, maybe willfully closing my pupil a bit or something. Either way, they don't bother me too much.



My mom and stepdad both had PRK, and it looked a lot worse than what I went through.

that's where i am too. houston to be exact. anyway, i get the starbursts in my left eye and my right eye is somewhat ok. i can see 20/20 corrected but it would still be nice to not have to worry about it. when i first had them done i saw 20/20 and that was blurry to me because with contacts i could see 20/15 so then i filled my script for glassed because of flying into the traffic pattern at my local airport and not being able to see as far as i used to with the contacts....

warranty? damn, where did you go? i didn't get one of those. can the eye still be operated on again? i'd sure like to say goodbye to my astigmatism......

No kidding, what the hell is going on around here?! I think the "we were all actually mid 40's, balding, male and unfortunate" quote must be bringing them in.

I work at a videogame company. (And that tank top's not skimpy! Look how wide those straps are!) I'm one of the better-dressed here on many occasions, I've never heard of any kind of dress code being mentioned, let alone enforced. I walked around barefoot for an entire day once--my shoes had gotten wet--and no one said anything. They do send out a company-wide email whenever an outside-the-studio executive is coming in, 'clean up your workstations, look busy, etc. etc.' but in general it's a very laid-back place.
