The long cleanup/hidden treasures
 

Moving day is in the not-too-distant future (Labor Day weekend, free food and soda/beer for all that help out...pm me for details), and given how bad Rho and I are at cleaning, we've decided it's best to start the process now.

It's not that we're necessarily bad at cleaning...it's just that our apartment is so cluttered. We've been here 3 years now, and we've accumulated quite a bunch of shit. It amazes me how quickly it piles up.

This weekend, I completely cleaned the kitchen and the bathroom. That was just the beginning though...Rho needs some sort of caddy to keep all her beauty care items together...there are so many of them...on the sink, in a basket we keep in there, under the sink, in a box in the linen closet, on the shower caddy...Jesus!

Rho started going through a couple of boxes this weekend and threw away half a trash bag of stuff. In doing so, we found something we've been looking for for a while...the menu for Steak and Hoagie Works...man, their sandwiches are so good! Meanwhile, I started cleaning off the dining room table and the desk, and also found something important...my ExxonMobil credit card bill that is due in 2 weeks.

Maybe I'll start taking before and after photos...the goal is to have this apartment cleaned up and everything unnecessary in storage by Memorial Day. And I'm sure we'll find more interesting items as the cleaning goes on.

I'm stopping for the night, but more reports will come as work continues...

I have a theory that, if you are able to pack something eight months before you actually move it, you probably don't need it...

Of course, it is just a theory, and it isn't like I abide by it myself. If I did, there would be at least one flat place in my entire home with nothing on it, and there isn't.

Hey...Einstein didn't warp time space, but he had a theory about it, right?

My version of it is, "If we packed it when we moved from NC to PA (1990), and it was still packed when we bought our house (1994), and it's still packed now, we can probably toss teh box unopened."

But, we also have been unable to put it into practice. That may change, though, since Mrs. Dallas quit her job (though, as she explained to our daughter yesterday evening, this does not mean she "doesn't do any work anymore"), she is on a house-organizing-and-cleaning jag, so this may change.

My own project is to brutally prune books. I have way too many, most of which I should really dump.

Tho I hate to just dump them. And it's too much of a pain to sell them piecemeal on fleabay.

I've got a garage sale pile starting in the basement. Purge! I'm shooting to earn $200 in an early summer sale. Furniture, dishes, Christmas crap, pans, books, toys, 10 speed, clothes, a gaggle of "decorative" objects. It will feel good to streamline.

Post a list. Some Cellarites might be interested.;)

A list???? Jeez... I'd have to type them in.

We'll see. I have somewhat erratic tastes... I may find more takers here than through other avenues. (Maybe I'll just make up surprise grab bags.)

got any old weathered encyclopedias? jinx wants to wallpaper the bathroom with pages from an old book. we threw out an old encyclopedia brittanica set when we moved and are now kicking ourselves.


I want to put a page that has the entry for "toilet" on it accross from the hopper.....

Well ... you said the Mrs. was not working ... how are her typing skills?

and lumberjim, yes, well, we do have an 11th edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica. However, it is one of Mrs. Dallas' most prized posessions, and a family heirloom (don't ask me where the fetish for the 11th Britannica came from), so I won't even suggest we get rid of that.

Can I interest you in some issues of the Journal of the American Musicological Society from the mid 80s?

Might I suggest a couple of bottles of Rutherford Hill Merlot? Reasonably priced, but a very high quality red wine.

I'll keep that in mind wolf... she does like wine (tho usually not reds). But I think for heavy-duty convincing it'll haveta be Canadian Club & ginger ale.
