Winter '76/'77
Do you remember the winter of '76/'77? It was colder than a witches...er...freezer, around these parts. The mighty Delaware river was frozen. Nothing was moving except the coal and oil coming in with the Coast Guard Icebreakers. Philadelphia Electric's Southwark Station got down to a 2 day coal supply.

The river looked like the artic and the wind blew unmercifully.
|
There was a little patch of open water at the head of the bay where it meets the river but the rest of the bay was packed. Even the Cape May- Lewes Ferry was frozen in.
|
It was harsh but in some ways pretty.
|
Even the Atlantic Ocean north of Cape May was frozen for 1/4 mile out, except for right at the beach.

Those are awesome, Bruce! Very cool...

That was a great winter to be a kid! There was a ton of snow. We spent hours hollowing out the enormous snow banks around the house and barns. hmm... we have some cool super 8 film of that. :)
