Winter '76/'77

Do you remember the winter of '76/'77? It was colder than a witches...er...freezer, around these parts. The mighty Delaware river was frozen. Nothing was moving except the coal and oil coming in with the Coast Guard Icebreakers. Philadelphia Electric's Southwark Station got down to a 2 day coal supply.

The river looked like the artic and the wind blew unmercifully.

There was a little patch of open water at the head of the bay where it meets the river but the rest of the bay was packed. Even the Cape May- Lewes Ferry was frozen in.

It was harsh but in some ways pretty.

Even the Atlantic Ocean north of Cape May was frozen for 1/4 mile out, except for right at the beach.

That was a great winter to be a kid! There was a ton of snow. We spent hours hollowing out the enormous snow banks around the house and barns. hmm... we have some cool super 8 film of that. :)

Have to agree. I don't remember that particular winter, but I do have shots from another winter from hell: 1996. If I find them, I'll post. :)

Great winter to be a TEENAGER -- my mom drove up to Cornell one weekend to visit my then soon-to-be stepdad, and got snowed in. My boyfriend and I took four days off from school (me) and work (him) and um, "hollowed out enormous snow banks around the house and barns"* -- no super 8 exists, thank god.

* that's what the kids were calling it, back in the day

LOL! I was a very immature dorky 12 year old. I had no idea how to find the out buildings.
